Detailing

Cives Steel Company has three wholly-owned Detailing Offices, with a combined total of 80 employees and a combined total of over 2,000 man-years of experience in detailing of structural steel.

These offices work solely for Cives Steel Company to Cives Steel Company standards. They operate as non-profit units of Cives Steel. Each office has a Drafting Manager, Project Leaders, Checkers, and Detailers. Cives Detailing Offices can concentrate on their expertise…Detailing.

Our Detailing Standards have been developed over several decades to make the most efficient use of the equipment and manpower in our fabrication shops.

Our Detailing Offices create material procurements, geometry drawings, shop detail drawings, field erection drawings, field bolt placement drawings, computer numerical control files for shop equipment, electronic bill of material files, and electronic 3D model files.

The benefits to Cives of having their own in-house Detailing Offices include the ability to achieve consistently high quality, excellent communication, in-house control, immediate response to changes and revisions, and the flexibility to share work between offices to meet project schedules.

The benefits to the clients and customers of Cives are a high level of customer service, on-time deliveries, and a job well done.

We have an extensive network of LANS and WANS to exchange electronic information.

We perform paperless projects through the use of Steel Detailing Neutral Files, CIS/2 Files, 3-D Model Sharing, electronic detailing software, scanners, digital printers, FTP and Email.

To Cives fabricating plants we issue electronic drawings, Bill of Material files and CNC Computer Numerical Control files for the automated shop fabrication equipment including drill lines, angle lines, plate punches, saws, and burning tables.

We primarily use SDS/2 software from Design Data Corporation and have over 60 licensed workstations.

To our customers we supply electronic 3D model files in SDNF or PML format that load into the engineers checking software to identify potential field interferences with piping, HVAC, vessels and other disciplines and to use for walk-through reviews.

We equip our Detailing Offices with the latest in CAD stations, software, plotters, digital printers, scanners, and Internet access.

Our Detailing trainees go through a comprehensive two-year training program that includes manual detailing, computer detailing, connection design, field site experience, shop floor experience, and work in the production and estimating departments at a steel plant. Our detailers gain a broad understanding of the downstream use of our deliverables.

We have direct access to Professional Engineers expert in the design of steel connections. Cives Engineering Corporation provides training, connection design guidelines, standards ,and software to our Detailing Offices.

Cives Steel Company owns its own structural engineering operation, Cives Engineering Corporation, which is available to support the clients of Cives Steel Company on construction projects in which Cives Steel Company participates. All design is supervised and approved by our Chief Engineer Larry S. Muir, P.E., President, Cives Engineering Corporation.

Mainframe design and connection design are performed by CEC, and CEC is fully protected by professional errors and omissions insurance for the work. The staff of CEC is on the cutting edge of technology in the area of connection design as evidenced by committee work, published papers, and textbooks which are in wide use in the industry.

In addition to mainframe and connection design, the CEC staff is fully capable of performing design review for customers (Value Engineering). The aggregate experience of the CEC staff is more than 160 years.
